Do Germs Cause Disease?
Dr. Thomas Sydenham, was known as the "English Hippocrates," explained the relationship between germs and disease as follows (it is as true then as it is now): "Germs seek their natural habitat-diseased tissue-rather than being the cause of diseased tissue. For example, mosquitoes seek the stagnant water, but do not cause the pool to become stagnant." (3) Thatís why chiropractors, by correcting your spinal subluxations, help keep your nerve and immune system healthy. Remember to eat well, keep fit, and come in for periodic adjustments. Germs donít stand a chance in a healthy body.

Chiropractic and Spinal Research
Hot flashesThis is a report on a 55 year old woman with a four year history of hot flashes related to natural menopause. A distinct downward trend in the frequency of hot flashes is noted following intervention with cervical and upper thoracic adjusting. The patientís improvement was based on entries from the patientís diary and clinical records.
Ear Infection An upset father brought his 9 year old son in for chiropractic care. He had been having chronic ear infections since he was 3 that had been getting progressively worse and had been on and off antibiotics at least every six weeks for the past six years. Five years prior tubes were put in his ears. The child was scheduled for another ear surgery and to have his swollen tonsils and adenoids removed. After the first chiropractic adjustment his tonsils and adenoids were normal size. The ENT doctor cancelled surgery. After 5 months the child had no ear infections, no sore throats, no colds, no flu and has been on no medications.
Headache 28 of a group of 53 headache sufferers received spinal care twice a week for three weeks. The remaining 25 served as controls. The use of analgesics decreased by 36% in the spinal care group, but was unchanged in the control group. The number of headache hours per day decreased by 69% and the headache intensity per episode decreased by 36%.
The Power of Prayer: More Evidence
Clinical studies continue to show prayer heals. Dr. Larry Dossey revealed the results of a second phase study at Duke University on the power of prayer. The MANTRA project at Duke is headed up by cardiologist Dr. Mitchell Krucoff and nurse practitioner, Susan Craven. The results show that heart patients who receive prayer have 50 percent to 100 percent fewer side effects than those patients not prayed for.
If patients agreed to be part of the study they were randomized and the "prayer" patientsí names went to prayer groups around the world. First names only were sent via e-mail to Buddhist groups in Nepal, Hindus in India and Jewish groups in Jerusalem. Catholic nuns, Unity Village Missouri and Protestants in North Carolina also participated.
The full report on the study will be published in an upcoming American Journal of Cardiology, according to Dossey. It will be the first time a heart journal has published a study on the effects of "distance" prayer. Dossey also noted hundreds of other studies on the power of prayer that, until now, have been mostly ignored by the allopathic, or traditional medical community. However, based on the Duke study Dossey concluded, "Thereís no going back. This is a huge transition in medicine. Medicine will not be able to retreat from the impact."
