 Adjusting Babies

Infants Need Chiropractic

All infants need a healthy spinal column. All babies need to have their spines checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic for the presence of vertebral subluxations or spinal nerve stress. Why is this important? It’s important because an unhealthy spine can interfere with the normal function of the nervous system and may cause serious health problems in infancy and later in life.

How can a baby’s spine become subluxated? The birth process is often very traumatic to the young spine and can cause subtle spinal damage. In addition, if the baby settles in an awkward position in the womb, especially during the final weeks of pregnancy, this can result in stress on the young body. Many chiropractors can check infants as young as one day old. With all you do for your newborn child, please ensure his or her spinal health with a chiropractic spinal checkup.

Ideally, the best time for an infant’s spinal care to begin is with spinal care for the mother-to-be. Chiropractic can help ensure that her pelvis is balanced and aligned thus preventing constriction of the uterus. A constrained uterus can restrict the fetus’ natural movements and this can result in a breech birth. Chiropractic care has been able to help breech presentation babies "turn," thus permitting a normal birth to proceed.

Quotes of the week

"If you love children, you will be rewarded in heaven, for we are all God’s children."

"We need to teach our children values by our own example." Dr. Catherine Maloof and Maureen Maloof

"How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in life you will have been all of these." George Washington Carver

Has your Child Ever Had A Fall?

Approximately half of all children have had a fall from a height by the time they are two years old. Did you know that a childhood fall or accident can cause damage years later? In a study of 78 children who had a minor injury, 6 months and one year later they were found to have scored less on a visual puzzle test and were more likely to have another mild head injury. At 6.5 years, they still scored less than controls. Reference(1) Wrightson P,McGinnV, Gronwall D. Mild head injury in preschool children: evidence that it can be associated with a persisting cognitive defect. J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry. 1995;59:375-380.

Why Do Children Need Chiropractic Care?

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked for the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. Later, learning to walk, ride a bicycle, and other childhood activities can cause spinal problems. While a bandage and some comforting words can help a skinned knee, the unseen damage to the child’s spine is the unique domain of a chiropractic doctor. Many childhood health complaints are brushed off as "growing pains" can often be traced to the spine. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify these problems and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults. Chiropractic has been shown to be helpful with scoliosis and many other so-called "normal" childhood health problems. Naturally, chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to a child’s spine. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and seem healthier that other children.

 Case Studies

Colic- A 3 month old baby came in with colic. The baby had been crying for countless hours for two months, creating stress not only for the baby, but the parents as well. Due to a forceps delivery and birth trauma, pinched nerves were found in the baby’s spine affecting digestion and his nervous system. When Dr. Maloof gently adjusted the baby, he was calm, relaxed and he slept through the night and his colic disappeared.

Lazy Eye- A 2 week old newborn baby came to see Dr. Maloof. The baby had birth trauma (vacuum extraction) and had a left lazy eye. Dr. Maloof found in her examination pinched nerves in her neck and cranium imbalance. When she adjusted the baby her eye returned to normal position.

Ear Infection- A 3 year old boy came in who had numerous ear infections and at least a dozen round of antibiotics. The doctors wanted to put tubes in his ears. Dr. Maloof examined the boy and found pinched nerves in his neck affecting his ear canal so his ears would fill up with fluid and not drain properly, causing the ear infections. By adjusting his neck his ears drained properly, his immune system increased and he no longer needed surgery or tubes in his ears.
