Five Alarm Fire

Yes! We survived the fire. On Friday April 8th, I went to work and arrived around 8:30am and saw a few fire trucks and there was a puff of smoke above the Vietnamese restaurant in my center. I stopped and spoke with the fireman and asked him if it was safe for me to go to my office and begin seeing patients and he said, sure no problem. So, I went into work thinking there was just a little fire that would be taken care of. I saw my first patient and then at 9am I heard an explosion, ran outside and the whole left side of the shopping center was in flames. It was such a scary moment and I ran in to get our things while my patient Carol began praying for my office to protect it from the fire. I went to turn my living air purifier on high before I left to help with the smoke. Maureen, thinking quickly left a message on our machine saying we are closed due to the fire because we had such a busy Friday scheduled and picked up the back up discs.

Well, for the next five hours, everyone from the center stood and watched these businesses go up in flames. There were 100 Firefighters, 20 Fire Trucks, working non-stop to get this fire under control. Rose thought that we should get our patient records because it looked like the fire was going to spread to our office, which we did. I have never seen a fire like that up close and personal, I thought this only happens in the movies. Believe me, It makes you realize you have no control over this situation but just to pray and ask God for protection. All the news stations were taping the fire and I was even interviewed for the channel 7 news.

After 5 hours the fire was finally under control, the whole street Los Alisos had been shut down and all the businesses were closed. Although 6 businesses were lost that day, nobody was hurt. We were thankful the firefighters were able to contain the fire and save the rest of the center and most importantly, my office. I have a deep appreciation for the firefighters that worked so hard. I came really close to losing everything and it really makes you stop and think that when you wake up in the morning, you never know what can happen.

We went back into the office around 2:30pm, and it was a miracle that we could not smell any smoke. Everyone thought we would have fire damage and that our office would smell like smoke for a week. Thank God for my Living Air Purifier. I made an investment 10 years ago and bought one for the office and it has been running 24 hour a day, 7 days a week keeping the air pure for all my patients. Years back when we had the fires in Laguna, I became a Distributor and sell them at my office, I even have one at home and it keeps the dust to a minimum and helps you breathe easier at night. Now, everyone is a true believer, because when they come into the center and see all the damage, even now with the demolition and all the dust, then they walk into my office and say it doesn’t smell like smoke, I say No! Thanks to my Living Air Purifier. I am so thankful everyday for all the blessings God has bestowed upon me and I will continue to serve and protect my patients and my community.

A Dedication to Mothers

I wanted to write a message to Mothers but I read a passage from Oprah that was perfect and I couldn’t have written it better myself so here it is.

I’m in awe of good mothers---those heroines all around me who sacrifice daily out of love for their children. In our society, we give motherhood plenty of lip service. We pat moms on the head, bring them flowers on Mother’s Day, and honor them before crowds. But at the end of the day, we don’t extend them the same respect we would a professor, a dentist, an accountant, or a judge. Women who choose full-time mothering are often put in a box by their friends and former colleagues—a container labeled JUST A MOM.

I believe the choice to become a mother is the choice to become one of the greatest spiritual teachers there is. To create an environment that’s stimulating and nurturing, to pass on a sense of responsibility to another human being, to raise a child who understands that he or she is created from good and is capable of anything—I know for sure that few callings are more honorable. To play down mothering as small is to crack the very foundation on which greatness stands.

The world can only value mothering to the extent that women everywhere stand and declare that it must be so. In our hands, we hold the power to transform the perception of motherhood. Whether we decide to work full-time while raising children, stay at home with our kids, or bear no children at all, we need to understand that any put-down of the decision to mother is a threat to women’s choices everywhere. We should no longer allow a mother to be defined as "just a mom." It is on her back that great nations are built. We should no longer allow any woman’s voice to be drowned out or disregarded. As we affirm other women, as we teach our sons, husbands, and friends to hold them in the highest regard, we honor both the mothers whose shoulders we’ve stood on and the daughters who will one day stand tall on ours.

In May—and every other month of the year—I honor and thank every great spiritual teacher who goes by the name of Mother.
