Whiplash: An Injury That Can Undermine Health

What causes whiplash? A whiplash injury occurs when the head and neck are thrown very quickly in one direction and then rebound in the opposite direction. Abnormal joint function, which is common after a whiplash trauma, can lead to a variety of disorders, including the following: Muscle and tendon pathology, chronic pain syndromes, erosion of joint surfaces, and nerve lesions.

Research shows that even low impact collisions can cause whiplash injuries. Many times whiplash injury can be detected immediately after an accident. However, a whiplash injury may take hours, weeks, months or even years before symptoms are noticed. This delay is due in part to the bleeding and formation of scar tissue that occurs around the injured area. The most obvious symptoms are neck and shoulder pain. However, you may experience other symptoms you might not associate with the whiplash injury, such as the following: Headaches, stiffness, irritability numbness and tingling in arms and hands, and blurred vision.

A whiplash injury left uncorrected can lead to disc degeneration and arthritis. Injury from an automobile accident, left uncorrected, can cause symptoms that may linger for years.

As a Doctor of chiropractic I have extensive training and experience in caring for soft tissue injuries like whiplash. The chiropractic approach to whiplash injury promotes recovery and reduces residual disabilities from the injury.

If you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident or are experiencing any of the symptoms described above, then call for your chiropractic evaluation immediately. If not corrected early, these problems can cause permanent damage, including degenerative changes to the spine.

Walk to stay young

Without much exertion, walking can provide the "stay young" benefits we usually get only from more strenuous activities. Walking is a great, easy-to-follow exercise. You can progress at your own pace, no equipment is required, and you can walk alone or with friends. It can provide tremendous benefits, including the following: Promotes restful sleep and reduces tension and stress. It can help take off extra weight. You burn up 320 calories per hour by walking 3 miles per hour. For every 11 hours of walking you will lose 1 pound (3500 calories equals 1 pound).

Walking also improves circulation and exercises the cardiovascular system and improves the ability to take in oxygen.

Dr. Maloof Case Study

Case study of Lisa B.

My health problems began in early 1990 with the diagnosis of a mitral valve prolapse. It was not severe enough for surgery, but doctors said I would need to stay on medication for the rest of my life to keep my heart rate at a normal rhythm. I also suffered a severe blow to my head that caused further problems with my back that led to migraine headaches. I had been to a chiropractor previously for a problem, but when I started feeling better, I stopped going. I didn’t realize the benefits of making chiropractic part of a healthy lifestyle. I knew I needed to seek chiropractic help when I made a major cross-country move. I had problems with my sciatic nerve, which made walking very painful.

I was taking daily doses of Lopressor for the mitral valve and regular doses of over-the-counter medications of any kind. After seeing Dr. Maloof for care, I no longer take Lopressor like I thought I was going to have to for the rest of my life. My sleep pattern is also much improved. I have been medication free for six months.

My experience with chiropractic care and Dr. Maloof has been extremely positive. She is so gentle and gets right to the cause of the problem to correct it. Like many other patients, I didn’t realize the greater benefits from incorporating chiropractic into my regular health care program. I continue to improve and my health has benefited tremendously from chiropractic. If I do get sick, it isn’t as severe and I recover much faster. My energy level is higher and I have a greater range of mobility. I love not having to rely on medication. Thank you Dr. Maloof!
